Whether you have been listening to Still With You for only a few minutes or several months, then you know how education and global awareness are highly valued by me. To advocated their importance, I am honored to welcome an amazing friend, Vanessa Mayes, Executive Director of Global Corner, International Learning Center. She is passionate about changing the lives and sound minds of elementary school students by bringing global education into the classroom.
Vanessa was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and has traveled extensively throughout her life. She was the Director of International Admissions at the University of Tampa prior to teaching Spanish to elementary and middle school students at the Montessori School of Pensacola. She knows the value of expanding horizons for young children and the impact it has on the entire community. When she first heard about The Global Corner many years ago, she knew immediately that she wanted to be a part of “Bringing the World to Life – One Child at a Time.”
What is The Global Corner? Founded in 2008, The Global Corner International Learning Center is a nonprofit organization located in Northwest region of Florida. Through a teacher-developed curriculum, Global’s instructors give students the ability to experience other cultures and languages without leaving their classrooms. This sparks a sense of curiosity and wonder for the world around them. They expand the horizons for students who might never have the opportunity to leave their own city – much less travel to other countries. For over ten years and nearly 70,000 students impacted, Global Corner continues to enable young citizens to develop a holistic worldview, encouraging critical thinking, celebrating international diversity, and increasing global awareness.
